Podcast Caramuel – Laurel Canyon I

El libro “Hotel California. Cantautores y vaqueros cocainómanos en Laurel Canyon” de Contra ediciones es la inspiración de este podcast. Barney Hoskyns narra, con bastante sentido del humor, la red de músicos y músicas que se creó en ese lugar de California en el periodo entre los años 1967 y 1976.  Dividido en dos programas, en esta primera parte nos centramos en el periodo del 67 al 70.

Los Ángeles no era entonces conocida por ser una ciudad musical, sino por el cine de Hollywood. En 1960 el epicentro de la música seguía siendo Nueva York. Entre el año 60 y el 65 se produjo un cambio y California empezó a superar a Manhattan. Las compañías discográficas empezaron a prestarle atención a esos sonidos y a buscar talentos en Los Ángeles. Simultáneamente comenzaron a abundar los clubs en Sunset Boulevard. El Troubadour ofrecía actuaciones de los grupos que empezaban a despuntar.

Podcast Caramuel – Brill Building Sound

El término Brill Building Sound, surgió por el edificio de mismo nombre situado en Nueva York en el número 1619 de Broadway. Muchos de los éxitos estadounidenses de los años 50 y 60 se concibieron en ese lugar.

Lo interesante del edificio es que integraba todas las ramas de la música. Allí podías escribir una canción, ir a otro piso a hacer los arreglos y luego acudir a los editores para que te la compraran, después duplicar copias, incluso reservar estudio para su demostración a los artistas o sus representantes y negociar con las emisoras de radio para su difusión.

Don Kirshner y Al Nevins copropietarios de la editorial Aldon Music, ficharon a parejas de compositores que empezaron a componer canciones de éxito comercial.
