Las influencias de la música de América durante los años 50 y 60 en el rock inglés, resultaron una catalización para las formaciones que surgieron posteriormente.

A mediados de los 50, los jóvenes ingleses escuchaban músicos importados de EE.UU. Elvis Presley, Bill Haley & his Comets o Chuck Berry.

Centenares de jóvenes de las ciudades inglesas y los suburbios comienzan a imitarlos. De Liverpool surgió el Mersey Beat y la diáspora se contagió a otras ciudades. Dejaban atrás la mentalidad conservadora de sus padres que habían salido recientemente de la segunda guerra mundial.

En 1957 habían empezado a llegar algunos músicos de Estados Unidos a tocar en el club de Alexis Korner en Inglaterra, Big Bill Bounzy, Sister Rosetta Tharpe con su Gibson eléctrica o Muddy Waters, no habían escuchado nada igual hasta entonces. Semejante ruido obligó a desplazar las actuaciones a The Ealing Club, en el oeste de Londres los albergó y permitió la creación de multitud de grupos.

Silvester Stewart, Sly Stone, tuvo sus inicios en radios y productoras locales de California. Fundó la banda Sly & The Family Stone y a finales de los 60 estaban haciendo sonidos novedosos en el panorama musical americano. Además de ser un grupo de hombres, mujeres, blancos y negros, que hacían política con su música, su puesta en escena y la participación coral de todos sus miembros, los convirtió en uno de los grupos más originales del momento. Su música ha trascendido en el tiempo.

Programa dedicado a la banda activa de 1969 a 1975 formada íntegramente por mujeres, Fanny. Lideradas por las hermanas June y Jane Millington, procedentes de Manila, se trasladaron a California. Nacieron en un momento en el que los grupos de rock femeninos eran inexistentes. Escuchamos a Fanny, pero también algunas de esas bandas pioneras en las que todas sus componentes eran mujeres: The Continental Co-ets, The Ace of Cups, Goldie & The Gingerbreads, The Pleasure Seekers.
